As the humidity of late summer sets in, the tick population doesn’t just stay active—it shifts in ways that can catch even the most vigilant residents off guard. ### **The Changing Guard: What’s Biting in August?** In August, the "Big Three" of Long Island ticks are all in play, but their behavior changes with the heat: - **The Tiny Terror (Nymphal Deer Ticks):** The peak of the poppy-seed-sized nymphs usually stretches through mid-August. Because they are nearly invisible, they remain the primary source of Lyme disease transmissions during summer barbecues and trail walks. - **The Aggressive Hunter (Lone Star Ticks):** Most active through late August, these ticks are known for "questing" more aggressively than others. Unlike deer ticks that wait for you to brush by, Lone Star ticks have been known to actively pursue a host. They are the primary concern for Alpha-gal syndrome (the red meat allergy). - **The Heat Seekers:** Ticks avoid the direct, mid-day sun. In August, they retreat into the deep shade of groundcovers like ivy, pachysandra, and the cool moisture of leaf litter. ### **Why August is "High Risk" for Your Yard** By late summer, many homeowners have let their guard down. Vegetation is at its thickest, and your "transition zones", where the lawn meets the woods, have likely become overgrown. This creates the perfect, humid microclimate for ticks to thrive just inches from your patio or kids' play sets. ### **Quick August Defense Checklist:** 1. **The 10-Minute Tumble:** Don't just wash your clothes after a hike; high heat is the only thing that kills ticks. Toss dry clothes in the dryer on high for 10 minutes before washing. 2. **Edge Control:** Keep your lawn mowed short right up to the woodline. Ticks hate the heat and sunlight of a well-manicured lawn. 3. **The "Freckle" Check:** In August, nymphal ticks look like nothing more than a new freckle that moves. Check the "hot spots": behind the knees, the waistband, and the hairline.
